Anthony J. “Tony” Mello, 65, died unexpectedly on Saturday, January 17, 2026, at Clinton Hospital after being stricken ill at home. He was the beloved husband of 20 years to Karen B. (Moore) Mello and a devoted father to his three children, Lucas Mello, Amanda Mello, and Lance Mello and his wife Angie. Tony was a proud and loving grandfather to his five adoring grandchildren, Landen, Lane, Kinsley, Thiago, and Isabella, who brought him immense joy.

He leaves his loving mother, Dolores (Portella) Mello; his siblings and their spouses, Lori Marshall and Del, Lynn Vargas and John, and Wayne Mello and Melissa; along with aunts, uncles, generations of nieces and nephews, extended family members, and many dear friends who will miss him deeply. He was predeceased by his infant son, Anthony J. Mello, Jr., and by his father, Antonio F. Mello.

Tony was born, raised, and educated in East Providence, Rhode Island, and was a graduate of East Providence High School, Class of 1978. Following graduation, he proudly enlisted in the United States Army, serving our nation with honor and dedication. After four years of service, he was honorably discharged as a Specialist Fourth Class. Upon returning home, Tony began his lifelong career as a diesel mechanic, working with the Carolina Freight Company and later with the Penske Corporation, where he also served as a long-time union steward before retiring.

Deeply rooted in his community, Tony was a long-time member of St. John the Guardian of Our Lady Parish in Clinton and held memberships with the Portuguese American Veterans (PAV) and the Crystal Club. He was a faithful NASCAR fan and found enjoyment and relaxation in completing countless jigsaw puzzles and tackling home repair projects. Known for his strong work ethic, stubborn determination, and unmistakable sense of humor, Tony will be remembered most for his unwavering love for his family and his roles as a devoted husband, proud father, and cherished grandfather.

Calling hours will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 PM on Friday, January 23, 2026, in the Philbin-Comeau Funeral Home, 176 Water Street, Clinton. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:30 PM on Saturday, January 24, 2026, at St. John the Evangelist Church, 80 Union Street, Clinton. Burial will be held privately at a later time in St. John’s Cemetery, Lancaster.
