Hassan, Marie B. (Poulin), 89, formerly of Barrington, died peacefully on February 22, 2024 at Wingate Residence on Blackstone Boulevard surrounded by her loving family.

Born in North Ferrisburgh, VT, a daughter of the late Joseph A. and Eva (Fontaine) Poulin, she lived in Barrington from 1971 to 2022, when she moved to Wingate.

Marie graduated from the Rhode Island School of Education Class of 1958, being the first member of her family to complete an education beyond grade school. She was an educator in Barrington at Hampden Meadows School, House of Little People and the Barrington Early Learning Center for many years. She was one of the first staff members at the East Providence/Seekonk YMCA, now known as Newman YMCA, where she started the swim instruction program.

Mrs. Hassan was a communicant of Holy Angels Church and a former member of the church choir and parish council. She was a volunteer of the Friends of Barrington Public Library, where she enjoyed working at the annual book sale, and a former member of the Bristol Community Chorus. She was a frequent participant in the gatherings of Barrington YMCA 1970’s “Swim Team Moms”.

Marie enjoyed knitting, cooking and reading, but most of all she enjoyed participating in the lives of her two grandchildren.

She is survived by a son, Robert J. Hassan and his wife Mary of Barrington; a daughter, Marianne Hassan of Albany, NY; and two grandchildren, Sarah R. Snyder and her husband Andrew of Durham, NC, and Kelly Facincani and her spouse Sara of Cumberland.

Marie’s funeral will be held on Monday, February 26, 2024, from the W. RAYMOND WATSON FUNERAL HOME, 350 Willett Avenue, Riverside at 7:45 a.m., with a Mass of Christian Burial at Holy Angels Church, Maple Avenue, Barrington at 9 a.m. Burial will follow in Notre Dame Cemetery, 359 Daggett Avenue, Pawtucket.

Calling Hours are Sunday 2-4 p.m. Flowers are respectfully omitted. Contributions in Marie’s memory to the Friends of Barrington Public Library Foundation, 281 County Road, Barrington, RI, 02806 would be deeply appreciated.

  2. The table grows smaller and smaller at our Swim Team Moms dinners. Marie always brought so much to it. My prayers are with you all at this sad journey.

I enjoyed our chats, reminiscing together and the fact that she had the same birthday as my sister which she loved whenever I mentioned this to her.
