Assante, Antonette, Marie, ‘Etta’, (Carlone), 88, died peacefully on February 24, 2012 surrounded by her loving family at Warren Skilled Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. She was the wife of the late George J. Assante.

Born in Barrington, a daughter of the late Pietro and Margherita (DeBalsi) Carlone, she was a lifelong resident of Barrington.

Antonette was a devoted mother, grandmother and great grandmother-most of all she was matriarch of her adoring Italian-American family. Etta chose to forgo college after graduating high school to enter the workforce in support of her family. She worked for the R.I. Department of Education in the 1950’s as an administrative assistant and retired from that position in 1980. She remained active in the East Bay as a volunteer and employee for the East Bay Mental Health Center as well as other community agencies well into the 2000’s.

Mrs. Assante was a communicant of Holy Angel Church and a member of the Women’s Guild. Her passion for life was driven by a devotion to other people especially family. Her home played host for decades to many happy, memorable holidays. Christmas Eve dinner was her grandest stage and the unique touch she put on that holiday lives on today.

She is survived by two daughters; Adele J. Carlson of Barrington and Anne M. Callanan of Lisle, IL; a son; George J. Assante of Union, NJ; a sister; Mary Schlageter of Cranston, beloved grandchildren; Amy Pontes, Leah Carlson, Briana Callanan and Casey Callanan, adored great grandchildren; Olivia and Avery Pontes and several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Rose Fafara, Pasquale, William and Peter Carlone.

Her funeral will be held on Tuesday February 28, 2012 from the W. RAYMOND WATSON FUNERAL HOME, 350 Willett Avenue, Riverside at 8:45 am with a Mass of Christian Burial in Holy Angel Church, Maple Avenue, Barrington at 10 am. Burial will follow in Santa Maria del Campo Cemetery, Upland Way, Barrington.
