Whitaker, Donald, L., 81, of Whitcomb Road, Riverside, died unexpectedly on November 28, 2013. He was the beloved husband of Eileen M. (Egan) Whitaker.

A lifelong resident of East Providence, he was the son of the late Herbert and Mary (Mahoney) Whitaker.

Mr. Whitaker was a firefighter for the East Providence Fire Department for 33 years before retiring in 1987. He also was a field investigator for the State of Rhode Island for 8 years.

Donald was a communicant of St. Brendan Church where he was a member of the Forever Young Club. He was a former athletic director at St. Brendan Church where he coached the girls CYO basketball team for 15 years. He was a 59 year member and past grand knight of the East Providence Knights of Columbus Council #1528. He was a Senior Vice Commander of the Riverside American Legion Post #10. He was a member and trustee of the East Providence Retired Fire and Police Departments Beneficial Association. He was a member of the Irish Ceilidhe Club of Rhode Island and the Ireland 32 Society.

Mr. Whitaker was a United States Navy Veteran serving during the Korean Conflict.

Besides his wife of 55 years, he is survived by a son; Donald L. Whitaker Jr. of Johnston, a daughter; Marilyn J. Cretella and her husband David of East Greenwich, a brother; Robert C. Whitaker of East Providence and two granddaughters; Katherine and Nicole Cretella. He was the brother of the late Herbert F. and Richard E. Whitaker and father-in-law of the late Martha M. Whitaker.

His funeral will be held on Tuesday December 3, 2013 from the W. RAYMOND WATSON FUNERAL HOME, 350 Willett Avenue, Riverside at 8:45 am with a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Brendan Church, Turner Avenue, Riverside at 10 am. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Mount St. Mary’s Cemetery.
