Guy A. Azza

Azza, Guy, A., 67, of Upland Way, died peacefully on August 4, 2013 surrounded by his loving family at the Philip Hulitar Center.

Born in Providence, a son of the late Guy V. and Victoria (Andreozzi) Azza, he was a lifelong resident of Barrington.

Guy was a graduate of the Maryknoll Seminary in 1967. He then went to Rhode Island College where he received a Bachelor of Arts and History degree in 1969 and earned his Masters of Education from Rhode Island College in 1990.

Mr. Azza was a guidance counselor for the Barrington School Department for 21 years before retiring in 2011. He was the Director of the Rhode Island Society of St. Vincent De Paul since 2012.

Guy was a communicant of Holy Angel Church and a communicant and lector at the Cathedral of SS. Peter and Paul, Providence and a Eucharistic Minister at Rhode Island Hospital. He was In-Country coordinator, Providence-Haiti Outreach, Port au Prince, Haiti. He was the Technical Advisor for the Cambodian Society of RI, Providence. He was a community Development Officer for the Riverside Neighborhood Housing Services. He was a Public Safety Director for the Providence Housing Authority, Providence. He was the director of PACE (People Acting Through Community Effort) Providence. He was the Director of Catholic Inner City, Providence. He was a Social Worker for Providence Health Centers, Providence and a Social Worker for the Department of Human Services, Providence.

Mr. Azza was the founder and treasurer of the Liberation through Education from 2000 to present. He was a life member of the NAACP. He worked in social services and as a community activist in Providence from 1970-1988. He was on the Board of Directors for the Peoples Redevelopment Corporation (PRC) from 1976-Present. He was also on the Board of Directors for the Socio-Economic Development Center for South East Asians from 1990-2007.

He is survived by a brother; Samuel Azza of Bridgewater, MA and several nieces and nephews.

His funeral will be held on Thursday August 8, 2013 from the W. RAYMOND WATSON FUNERAL HOME, 350 Willett Avenue, Riverside at 8:45 am with a Mass of Christian Burial in Holy Angel Church, Maple Avenue, Barrington at 10 am. Calling hours are Wednesday 4-7 pm.
