Sweet, Harold, J., 86, of Bradford Avenue, died peacefully on December 30, 2009 surrounded by his loving family at the Philip Hulitar Inpatient Center, Providence. He was the husband of the late Mary E. (Donovan) Sweet.

Born in Providence, a son of the late Dr. George D. Sweet M.D. and Celia (Donahue) Sweet, he was a lifelong resident of East Providence.

Mr. Sweet was the owner and operator of Sweet the Florist Co. from 1950-1965 where he received several awards for his floral displays. He later was a quality controller for the former First National and Almac’s Grocery Stores for 23 years.

Harold was a member of Metacomet Country Club for 35 years, Teamsters Local #251 and Briggs Beach, Little Compton for over 50 years. He was a communicant of St. Luke Church, Barrington.

Mr. Sweet was a United States Army Veteran serving during World War II, where he participated in the Battle of the Bulge and was a recipient of the Purple Heart.

He is survived by his daughter; Robin D. Spellman and her husband James E. Spellman of Rehoboth, MA and three grandchildren; James J., Sean D. and Meaghan S. Spellman. He was the father of the late Pamela A. Sweet and brother of the late George P. Sweet.

His funeral will be held on Monday January 4, 2010 from the W. RAYMOND WATSON FUNERAL HOME, 350 Willett Avenue, Riverside at 8:45 am with a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Luke Church, Washington Road, Barrington at 10 am. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Mt. St. Mary Cemetery, Pawtucket.
