John R. Gray

Gray, John, R., 68, formerly of Starbrook Drive, died peacefully on August 28, 2012 surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Cheryl (Kottler) Gray.

Born in Bar Harbor, ME, a son of the late Reginald and Rita (Carter) Gray, he lived in Barrington for 28 years and Riverside for 5 years.

Mr. Gray was a graduate of the University of Maine Class of 1966. He then received his M.A.T. in 1967. He then went on to receive his Sixth year degree in Education Administration from the University of Connecticut. He started his career in education in Rockland, ME and then moved onto Norwalk and Ledyard, CT. He was the Assistant Principal in Stonington, CT before moving to Barrington.

Mr. Gray was the Principal at Barrington Senior High School for 29 years before retiring in 2009. After retirement he served as Interim Principal at East Greenwich High School and the Nayatt Elementary School in Barrington.

John was a United States Navy Veteran where he served aboard the U.S.S. Fulton during the Vietnam era.

Besides his wife of 44 years, he is survived by a daughter; Michelle A. Medeiros of Barrington, a son; Adam P. Gray and his wife Allison Newberg Gray of Ellington, CT, a brother; Reginald Gray and his wife Betty of Houlton, ME and four grandchildren; Morgan and Brandon Medeiros and Ethan and Isabel Gray. He was the father of the late John Michael Gray.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday August 30, 2012 in the W. RAYMOND WATSON FUNERAL HOME, 350 Willett Avenue, Riverside from 4-8 pm. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday September 1, 2012 in St. James Lutheran Church, Middle Highway, Barrington at 10 am. Burial will be held in Elm Grove Cemetery, Mystic, CT.
