Merrill, Joseph, F., Jr., 89, of Barrington, died peacefully on October 23, 2013 surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Betty Joyce (Smyth) Merrill.

Born in Malden, MA, a son of the late Joseph Freeman Merrill Sr. and Erma (Harriman) Merrill, he lived in Barrington for 51 years.

Mr. Merrill was manager of the American Universal Insurance Co. for 47 years before retiring in 2000. He also was the State of New Hampshire Insurance Examiner from 1980-2002.

Joseph was a member of the Rhode Island Country Club and a former member of the Masons. He enjoyed golfing, traveling, music and spending time with his loving grandchildren.

Mr. Merrill was a United States Marine Corp Veteran serving during World War II in the South Pacific.

Besides his wife of 59 years, he is survived by two daughters; Joanne Merrill of Barrington and Sandra Merrill Pugsley of Bedford, NH, four grandchildren; Lisa Pugsley, Ross Pugsley, Steven Bergwall and Douglas Bergwall and a sister; Jean Carter of Fort Myers, FL. He was the brother of the late Melvin Merrill.

His funeral service will be held on Friday October 25, 2013 in the W. RAYMOND WATSON FUNERAL HOME, 350 Willett Avenue, Riverside at 6 pm. A private burial with Military Honors will be held on Forest Chapel Cemetery, Nayatt Road, Barrington.
