Avila, Joseph, G., 56, of Hobson Avenue, a youth, high school, college and semi-pro soccer coach, died unexpectedly on July 1, 2010 in Huntington, W.V. He was the beloved husband of Harriet (Fellouris) Avila.
Born in Terceira, Portugal, a son of the late Joseph and Helena (Santos) Avila, he was a lifelong resident of East Providence.
Mr. Avila was a foreman for the Gripnail Corp., East Providence for the past 40 years.
Joseph was a member of the New England Soccer Hall of Fame. A coaching career that spanned the last three decades he coached both boys and girls in ranges from the youth level to the premier league, to the U.S. Youth Soccer Olympic Development program to high school, to college, to the RI Stingrays of the United Soccer League.
Mr. Avila was the head coach of La Salle Academy girls soccer team for the past two seasons where the team had compiled a 29-0-3 record, winning each of the last two Division 1 state championships. He also coached the Barrington high school girls to two state titles in 1991-1992 and the North Kingston high school boys to a state championship in 1999. He enjoyed playing soccer and golf.
Besides his wife of seven years, he is survived by a daughter; Patricia Costa, a son; Christopher Avila, two brothers; Carlos and Duarte Avila, two sisters; Maria Andrade and Isabella Avila, two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Antonio Avila.
His funeral will be held on Wednesday July 7, 2010 from the W. RAYMOND WATSON FUNERAL HOME, 350 Willett Avenue, Riverside at 8:30 am with a Concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial in St. Brendan Church, Turner Avenue, Riverside at 10 am.
