Reverend Gerald W. Hussey, 72, Pastor Emeritus of St. Catherine of Siena Parish, Little Compton, and St. Madeleine Sophie Parish, Tiverton, died Saturday, March 23, 2019.
Born in Providence, a son of the late Walter J. and Evelyn (Hobin), he attended Barrington elementary schools and Barrington High School, all located in the town of Barrington.
In preparation for the priesthood, he studied at Providence College and at Pope John XXIII Seminary in Weston, Massachusetts. He was ordained a priest on November 4, 1978 at St. Brendan Parish in Riverside by the Most Reverend Kenneth A. Angell.
Father Hussey served as assistant pastor at St. Luke Parish, Barrington (1978-81); Sts. Peter and Paul Parish, West Warwick (1981-82); Mary, Mother of Mankind Parish, North Providence (1982-91); and at St. Augustine Parish, Providence (1991-96). In 1996, he was appointed pastor of St. Catherine of Siena Parish, Little Compton. In 2000, Father Hussey also assumed the pastorate of St. Madeleine Sophie Parish, Tiverton, while remaining pastor of St. Catherine of Siena. Father served at St. Catherine of Siena and St. Madeleine Sophie until his retirement as Pastor Emeritus of both parishes in 2017.
Father Hussey also served as a member of the diocesan Catholic Cemeteries Board.
During his retirement, Father Hussey resided at his home in Newport and assisted at area parishes.
Father Hussey had dual citizenships for the United States of America and Ireland. He was a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians. He was vested as a Knight of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem.
He is survived by three brothers, Walter J. Hussey Jr. and his wife Julie of Rowley, MA, twin brother, John G. Hussey and his companion Katherine E. Elliott of Boston, MA and Captain Robert M. Hussey USMM and his wife Lynn Sluiter of Addison, VT; a sister, Nancy K. Hussey R.N. of Barrington; sister-in-law, Kathleen Riley of Narragansett; eight nieces and nephews and ten great nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Brian F. Hussey and uncle of the late Captain Brian F. Hussey Jr. USMC.
Visitation will be on Friday March 29, 2019 from 1 to 4 p.m. in Catherine of Siena Church, 74 Simmons Road, Little Compton followed by a Parish Mass at 4 p.m.
A Concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial for the repose of Father Hussey’s soul will be offered on Saturday March 30, 2019 at 11 a.m. St. Luke Church, 108 Washington Road, Barrington. Burial will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Providence. Flowers are respectfully omitted.

Father Hussey was a wonderful priest, pastor, friend and confidant to many! We were blessed to share twenty years with him as our pastor. He will be sorely missed. We loved his Irish flair and humor. We send our condolences to his wonderful family, and miss Robert who recently moved north.
Virginia and I always looked forward to and thoroughly enjoyed his succinct homilies that were realistically instructional and God loving. He was one in a billion and will be sorely missed.

Never a finer priest! His homilies were none to be compared. My family is ever grateful to have such a wonderful & caring priest. He made his mark on all of us & instilled the faith well in my children, now adults! To heaven he will go!!!

Rest in peace Fr. Hussey–you always had an infectious smile and will be remember for your jovial personality. We were a breathe of fresh air both at Mary Mother and St. Augustine. I will always be grateful to you for con-celebrating my dad’s funeral many years ago when you were at MMM parish. You will be missed by your Little Compton, St. Catherine’s, family and all who knew you. Watch over all of your family and friends here on earth.
So deeply sorry to read about Fr. Gerry. We grew up together and would run into one another over the years; he never changed, always had a big smile and a story to tell. Family and friends who lived in his parishes thought the world of him. My deepest sympathy to Jay and the entire family.
Father Hussey was a very good priest and taught us well in word(homily) and deed!
He gave us his best and may the good Lord receive him in our Father’s house as his good and faithful servant priest.
Father Hussey always gave a sermon that made sense, was to the point, and made us think. He was a no nonsense individual who was kind and spiritual. We feel blessed to have been been part of his parish. He was wonderful to my mom whose antics always made him smile. Rest in peace. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family.

My family, kids will miss Fr. Hussey a great deal. He was a very nice man and a big part of our parish life in Little Compton, RI. I will never forget his excellent sermons from the altar. No one delivered them better than he did.

Fr. Hussey was a big part of my families life. He will be missed by so many people who knew him. He was a devoted priest and I know he is in his heavenly home. My deepest sympathy to his family.. I will keep them in my thoughts and prayers. Rest in peace Gerald.
Fr. Hussey married my husband and I and he baptized my son. I loved him very much and will miss our conversations. May he Rest In Peace.

You have left us much too soon, dear Gerald, and have left a void in the hearts and lives of all those who knew, loved and respected you. You touched so many people, in so many ways with your caring, compassion, faith and a generous dose of Irish wit. For me, the void you leave will be filled a long trail of happy memories “As the World Turned” in the lives of the Hobin, Hussey, Quilty clans. Rest in peace, my cousin, in the eternal rest and peace you have earned and so richly deserve. My love and prayers will be with you always.
Great guy,priest,friend and pastor. Admired by all and will be greatly missed —- in a life time, meeting a man like this is rare and seldom encountered. We the fortunite had him as pastor and friend for many years. He will be in our heart and prayers always.
