Scholes, Robert E., 87, of Fairway Drive, died peacefully on December 9, 2016 at home surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of JoAnn (Schott) Scholes.

Born in Queens, NY, a son of the late Edward ‘Ted’ Scholes and Lila (Emmallo) Scholes, he lived in Barrington for 40 years.

Mr. Scholes was a Professor of English Literature at Brown University for over 20 years. He was an author and had written thirteen books.

Robert received his B.A. from Yale University and received his PhD at Cornell University. He was a United States Navy Veteran serving during the Korean Conflict.

Besides his wife of 45 years, he is survived by a daughter, Cynthia M. Putnam of Seattle, WA; three step-sons, Richard P. Putnam of Falmouth, MA, Gregory D. Putnam of Madison, WI and Michael C. Putnam of Brooklyn, NY and three granddaughters, Olivia, Eva and Piper. He was the father of the late Christine J. Scholes and Peter C. Scholes.

A Memorial Service will be held at a date and time to be announced.
