Gallagher, Robert, J., Sr., 91, of Monmouth Drive, Riverside, died peacefully on August 24, 2013 surrounded by his loving family at the Good Samaritan Medical Center, Brockton, MA. He was the husband of the late Stephanie A. (Chura) Gallagher.

Born in Seekonk, MA, a son of the late Matthew J. and Winifred E. (Coyle) Gallagher, he lived in Riverside since 1954.

Mr. Gallagher was the founder and owner of the Robert J. Gallagher & Associates Insurance Agency for 40 years before retiring in 2007. He was a graduate of St. Raphael’s Class of 1938 and a graduate of St. Mary’s Seminary and University Class of 1948. He then went on to receive his Master’s degree in Business from Babson College.

Robert was a communicant of St. Brendan Church. He was Chairman of the Rhode Island Kidney Association. He was appointed by the Rhode Island Lieutenant Governor as Chairman of the Organ Donor program to coordinate the efforts of the Rhode Island Kidney Association and the Life Underwriters Organ Donor program.

Mr. Gallagher was the 1963 President of the Rhode Island CLU Chapter and was President of the RIAIFA in 1971. He was the recipient of the R. Kelly Sheridan Award in 1974. He was a member of the Rhode Island Irish Kings, the Pawtucket Lions Club and the former To-Kalon Club. He enjoyed skiing, swimming and reading.

Robert was a United States Merchant Marine Veteran serving during World War II.

He is survived by a son; Robert J. Gallagher Jr. and his wife Irene of Bridgewater, MA, a daughter; Stephanie G. Rooney and her husband John of North Easton, MA, a sister; Winifred T. Gallagher of New York City, NY and five grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Matthew P. Gallagher and Roberta L. Gallagher.

His funeral will be held Friday August 30, 2013 from the W. RAYMOND WATSON FUNERAL HOME, 350 Willett Avenue, Riverside at 8:45 am with a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Brendan Church, Turner Avenue, Riverside at 10 am. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
