Johnston, Stephen E., 73, longtime resident of Barrington, Rhode Island, now residing in Warren, Rhode Island, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, February 1, 2016. He leaves his wife, Martha Johnston (Jones), and his children, Cathleen Johnston of Barrington, Elizabeth Scheffel and her husband, Douglas of Kalamazoo, MI, and Andrew Johnston and his wife, Christine of Mansfield, MA. He was Umpah to eight grandchildren: Yvette, Stephen, Samuel, McKenzie, John, William, Benjamin and Meghan. In addition, he is survived by his sisters, Claudette Erban and Denise Champlin and by his brother, James Johnston.

Stephen was born on February 8, 1942, in Providence, Rhode Island to Odette and William Johnston. He is a graduate of Providence College where he was a distinguished member of ROTC and of Harvard Business School. He spent his career in labor relations and human resources. Upon retirement, he worked as a senior member of Governor Carcieri’s administration for the State of Rhode Island. Steve served as the Senior Warden of Saint John’s Church in Barrington. He’ll always be remembered for his work ethic, generosity, and great love of his family.

A memorial service will be held Friday, February 5, 2016, at St. John’s Church in Barrington, RI, at 10am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Stephen’s name to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. (www.michaeljfox.org)
